The Shining Meets Twin Peaks In The Red Room 237

Purgatory, a Twin Peaks and The Shining mashup by Jared Lyon in which The Red Room and Room 237 meet.

Name two iconic floor patterns… Chances are high you’ll mention both the zig zag floor in the Black Lodge from Twin Peaks and the grid-based carpet as seen in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.

Jared Lyon, former organizer of the Twin Peaks Fest, spent hours in Photoshop to create this perfect mashup called Purgatory, in which The Red Room and Room 237 meet.

One day I was struck by how the iconic floor patterns from Twin Peaks and The Shining could be matched up, and how they both can be viewed as representing a sort of purgatory. So, a bunch of hours in Photoshop, and voila! Originally, I made the graphic without the characters, but in the end, decided to add them in.

You can almost hear The Man From Another Place say: “REDRUM!”

Twin Peaks X The Shining

UPDATE: Poster prints are being considerend and may be available soon.

And is this line by Jerry Horne a reference to The Shining in Twin Peaks?

All work and no play make Ben and Jerry dull boys

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” was a phrase that existed in popular culture prior to The Shining. It being used in Twin Peaks isn’t a reference to The Shining.

Thanks for sharing that, Andre. I didn’t know! I watched The Shining at too young of an age, and that phrase will forever be associated with the movie. Never heard it elsewhere since, except for the variation in Twin Peaks.

I disagree: I suspect it could very well be a reference to The Shining, seeing as the implication is that Ben and Jerry will become not “dull” per se but rather will embark on some twisted/evil adventures (like Jack)… In pop culture the phrase doesn’t have that same edge to it; it rather suggests dimness or blandness, which Ben and Jerry most definitely are not.

TP does a beautiful homage to TS. The use of RED and BLUE everywhere, “All work and no play”, huge hotel in the mountains…also, during a scene transition you see the mountains transition into a janitor mopping the floor of the hotel. During that transition, the janitor looks like a giant in the mountains. I’m assuming that you all saw Room 237. If not, watch it!

Any. Vance there are prints of this available?

Two of the greatest productions of all time in my opinion. The picture with the two floors is brilliant!
I just wish I knew more people who loved these things as much as I do.
