When Dougie says 'make sense of it', there's something odd about the phrasing.  Yes, his speech is very stilted anyway - but it's almost like he's talking backwards.  I think it's also because the blink he does looks wrong...

 I felt like the drawings were his memories of what has happened… He fell out of existence (the scribble with the line going straight down).  Then he   climbed the ladder out of nonexistence and ended up as Dougie. Now he  is taking steps to get back into the real world, as little things happen. He is remembering who he is and climbing his way back into existence as Cooper step by step (the stairs).

My guess, on re-watch, is the steps are the zigzag floor as others have said.

The other thing is the "ladders", if viewed sideways, look like curtains.
